The Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act: PASSED!
It PASSED!! And by a landslide vote of 300+ to 99!
If you remember, earlier this summer I made a reel about how kids are limited to what type of milk & fat percentage that they are allowed to have in school. Why? I guess somewhere down the line someone decided that whole & 2% milk was too sugary… (how did we get here??)
While milk does have sugar in it, it is a NATURAL source of sugar. Aside from sugar, here is the list of what milk provides:
Calcium: Essential for building and maintaining strong bones and teeth.
Vitamin D: Helps the body absorb calcium and supports bone health.
Protein: Important for growth, repair of body tissues, and overall body function.
Vitamin B12: Vital for red blood cell formation and neurological function.
Phosphorus: Works with calcium to build strong bones and teeth, and also helps produce energy.
Riboflavin (Vitamin B2): Helps the body break down carbohydrates, fats, and proteins for energy.
Potassium: Aids in maintaining healthy blood pressure and fluid balance in the body.
Vitamin A: Important for vision, immune function, and skin health.
Niacin (Vitamin B3): Supports energy production and helps maintain healthy skin
Now that this new act has passed, kids are able to choose from whole, 1%, & 2%, white or chocolate milk. In doing so, this will bring back kids’ favorites, whole and 2% milk (most popular choices based on research). This will also decrease the amount of milk that has been thrown away due to kids not loving the option available.
While this may seem like a small act, this is a huge “W” for dairy.
